What to expect in your first therapy session
Almost everyone feels a flutter of nerves before their first session. That's normal — you're about to talk to a stranger about personal things. Knowing what to expect takes a lot of the edge off.
The first session is mostly orientation
You won't be expected to pour out your whole life story. A first session is usually about getting to know each other: what brings you here, what you'd like to be different, a little background, and how you both like to work. It's as much you interviewing them as the other way round.
You're allowed to not know
"I'm not even sure why I'm here" is a perfectly good place to start. A skilled therapist will help you find the thread. You also don't have to share anything you're not ready to.
Fit matters more than anything
The single biggest predictor of whether therapy helps is the relationship. If after a session or two it doesn't feel right, it's completely okay to try someone else — it's not a failure, it's finding your fit.
Getting the most from it
Be as honest as you can, including about the therapy itself ("that landed wrong", "I'd like more structure"). Notice what comes up between sessions. And give it a little time — the first session is the start of a process, not a one-off fix.
